The Department of Information Engineering at the University of Brescia, Italy, offers a 12-month research assistant/post-doc position (assegno di ricerca) on Neurosymbolic Approaches for Reconnaissance in Dynamic Environments by Teams of AI and Human Agents.

The position is offered as part of the HAI-PCCA project https://federico-cerutti.unibs.it/projects/2022-arl/ , funded by the USA Devcom ARL, and in collaboration with UCLA, University of California Los Angeles, USA; Cardiff University, UK; and Imperial College London, UK.

Embodied AI-enabled agents are critical in extreme, highly dynamic, contested environments. Joint All-Domain Operations depend on efficiently coordinating and synchronising perception, cognition, communication, and actions among agents at the tactical edge and between the edge and command-control. This project aims to overcome current barriers to AI working effectively with humans. It will enable teams of humans and AI agents to collaborate effectively, where agents learn, both during a mission and from one mission to another, how to efficiently coordinate their local perception-cognition-communication-action (PCCA) loops with team-wide global PCCA loops.

Applications are invited until January 10th 2023 at 23:59h CET, following the instructions available at

WHAT DOES BRESCIA OFFER?

The Department of Information Engineering at the University of Brescia is an exceptional place for continuing your studies. The Italian Ministry of Research certified it by awarding it the title of Department of Excellence in 2018: only 11 out of over 180 such departments are in information engineering. It also managed to recently attract two Rita Levi-Montalcini laureates, a remarkably competitive programme open to anyone in the world researching in any academic discipline, with just 24 awards per year.

Brescia is embedded in a vibrant and excellence-driven research and industry landscape. It is the second city of Lombardy, one of the wealthiest regions in the EU, with a GDP per capita about 26% higher than the EU average. The region is central to Italian Research and Development efforts, attracting 21% of the total national investments.

Brescia is in the top 10% of Italian cities for quality of life. It is also only 40 minutes away from Milan—the economic centre of Italy and one of the world's fashion capitals—and from Verona—the city of Romeo and Juliet. It is also less than two hours away from Venice, often referred to as the most beautiful city in the world.

Brescia's cultural panorama is superb, with a dozen museums, including one UNESCO World Heritage site just within the city centre. Merely a few hundred meters away, one of the world's only 28 "Italian Tradition" certified opera theatres hosts world-class productions each year. This is just one of the half-a-dozen theatres that drive the city's terrific cultural scenery.

Brescia's countryside is breathtaking. Within less than 100 km, you can walk on the Adamello glacier; enjoy World-Cup skiing tracks; experience the adrenaline of flying with wing suits as well as the treats that the largest Italian lake (lake Garda) can offer you, maybe sitting just next to one of the many jet setters who choose it every year for their summers.
