The Knowledge in Artificial Intelligence group (KAI) of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam seeks a new Assistant Professor "Logic in Artificial Intelligence".  

The KAI group, with roots in the internationally renowned Knowledge Representation and Reasoning research group of the VU Amsterdam, researches the representation,  acquisition,  extraction, and management of explicitly modeled, mostly symbolic, knowledge and the usage of such knowledge in artificial intelligent agents.

We want to strengthen our group with a colleague with enthusiasm for, and a track record in research in (computational) Logic, for example, but not limited to someone with a background in formal methods (DLs, Datalog, OBDA) related to the Semantic Web, or Knowledge Graphs more generally.

The Knowledge in Artificial Intelligence group (KAI) of the Computer Science department at the VU seeks a new colleague who will contribute to our research on Logic in AI. Your research will be in close collaboration with our colleagues in the other AI research groups: Learning and Reasoning, Social AI, Computational intelligence, Machine Learning and User-Centric Data Science. Your teaching will be within the Bachelor Artificial Intelligence (teaching courses and thesis supervision).

JOB DESCRIPTION

The mission of the KAI group is to gain a better understanding of the representation, acquisition, extraction and management of explicitly modelled, mostly symbolic, knowledge and to use such knowledge in artificial intelligent agents. We want to strengthen our group with a researcher with enthusiasm for, and a track record in, (computational) Logic.

Your duties

  • perform research in Logic in Artificial Intelligence
  • supervise PhD students
  • teach in the study programmes of the Department of Computer Science, most prominently the Bachelor Artificial Intelligence
  • supervise MSc/BSc student research projects
  • contribute to and write research grant proposals
  • contribute to departemental management tasks

REQUIREMENTS

  • a PhD degree in (computational) Logic or closely related area plus experience in post-doctoral research
  • a track record of published work about Logic, with a particular focus of Logics for Artificial Intelligence
  • enthusiasm about Logic and its role in Knowledge Representation and Reasoning
  • academic teaching experience including the supervision of MSc and PhD students
  • experience in collaborative research and an interdisciplinary mindset

On full-time basis the remuneration amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,974 (scale 11) and a maximum €5,439 (scale 11), depending on your education and experience. The job profile is based on the university job ranking system and is vacant for at least 0.8 FTE.

We offer a Career Track position at the level of Assistant Professor. A career plan to grow from Assistant Professor (profile Universitair Docent 2) to Assistant Professor (profile Universitair Docent 1) will be made and formalised in a Career Track agreement. The initial appointment will be for a period of 18 months. 15 months after the starting date, performance will be evaluated. After a successful evaluation permanent employment will be granted.
